Q and A with Doryn

When you were living in London, you wrote a blog called Doryn’s Dish, and it became a huge hit. Why did you write the blog, and did its popularity surprise you?

I started Doryn’s Dish as a way to teach myself web design! The idea was to post all my recommendations for anything and everything that I really loved, from spa treatments to clothes to stories about my friends and family. I had such an amazing response, I turned DD into an official blog, and kept the posts coming regularly. My readers really trusted my obviously true enthusiasm for my favorite things. They were also fascinated with my experience as an expat in London and all the great places I traveled. I have to say that my interior design posts were everybody’s favorites, which is not surprising, since it is the focus of my interest and career! I loved being able to help others make their lives more enjoyable through my own experiences!

How would you characterize your design aesthetic?
I like to work with lots of texture and great clean lines. I can really do any style and feel that this is kind of rare with designers. I like to keep my work hip and fun, a little outside the box but not too out there that it will look dated easily. But ultimately, it is about having a stylish interior that the client loves, and that the environment is also usable and fits their lifestyle. There is nothing worse than a home or a room that looks fabulous but nobody wants to hang out in because it is so uncomfortable.

How does life in NY inform your work?
I get inspired daily in NY, just walking down the street. There is so much happening around you every day. Small hotels, clubs, lounges and restaurants seem to have the biggest impact on my design thoughts. I always get amazing ideas when I go to these places.

Can you talk a little bit about what you did on Extreme Makeover, and why it was a good challenge for you?
I was hired by the producers to come in as the project was finished. I would arrive the week of the show, just before the home was revealed to the owner and the public. My job was to help pull all the rooms together and oversee final staging. I loved the energy, the fast pace and the satisfaction you felt when there was a satisfied customer, and there was one every week! It was a real thrill to work in television!

I know that you love the work of designers like Kelly Wearstler, Victoria Hagan, Steven Gambrel, to mention a few. Looking outside of interior design, what in the world of art, fashion, architecture and pop culture informs your work?
Fashion often informs my work. I can see someone walking down the street in NYC who put together some great colors or cool patterns, and that can immediately become a palette for me. Architecture is always an influence. I have traveled all over the world and each location has had an impact on me, and how I view design. Even small details can be really memorable, like a molding or a door design. And I will apply it to my work at some point.

Finally, if there is anything else interesting about you I don’t know about, can you tell me other things that add to your “eye”?
If I wanted to toot my own horn, I think my biggest gifts when I am doing an interior design project is my ability to read people, connect with them and understand their needs and desires as it applies to their environment. I am also really open to any idea that works, blending the old with the new, the expensive with the affordable, and creating interiors that are stylish, beautiful and comfy. I also try to be very open, real and non-judgmental with clients. I am there to help them, not intimidate them, force ideas on them, or make the process painful. I want everybody to be happy and satisfied at the end of every project.
